Since US President Donald Trump has imposed fees to some countries, including India, the growning of apples in Kashmir has doubled worries. The Trump administration has imposed an additional 26 per cent fee for US products, citing high fees from India. Now these farmers have begun to see their future in the dark. It is believed that India can now reduce the fees on US products.

Kashmir’s horticulture industry threatened

According to Deccan Herald’s report, the new fee fears that India may be pressured to reduce the import duty on products such as Apple and Acraft Pulses to implement a favorable trade agreement with the United States. If this happens, this move will adversely affect the horticulture sector of Kashmir. Due to the reduced import duty, American apples and walnuts will become very cheap in India. There is a risk of damaging local producers.

Everything will be destroyed by apple

Bashir Ahmed Bashir, president of Kashmir Valley Fruit Producers Cum Dealer Association (KVFGU), says the arrival of cheap apples from the US will destroy the Indian markets. Also, it can be harmful to small makers who do not have alternative income. Bashir and other local producers fear that the prices of their production will be reduced by the goods of imported apples and walnuts. Because of this, many families who rely on their crops are outside business.

Emotional appeal to Prime Minister Modi

At the same time, such small farmers, who are the backbone of Kashmir’s agricultural economy, are particularly sensitive to prices fluctuations and market defects. Since the rest of the livelihood is not a reliable way, many farmers not only view walnuts and apple farming as an income source, but also consider the integrated part of their cultural identity. Last month, Bashir’s organization sent a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for an emotional appeal. Bashir’s organization refers to producers from 13 parts, including major manufacturing centers such as Srinagar, Sobur and Paramulla.

The economy of Kashmir will be broken

The letter emphasized the uncertainty of the horticulture area of Kashmir. It contributes to 92 percent of India’s Walnut production and the largest production of apples. Bashir wrote, ‘We faced natural disasters and political unrest with flexibility. But this change in trade policy may be a dangerous setback for the already struggling industry.

According to Bashir, KVFGU’s demands are clear and very important. India should oppose US pressure on tariffs and instead, to protect domestic producers, the US should increase the cost of apples by 100 percent. Without such actions, Bashir has warned that ‘the backbone of Kashmir’s economy cannot be compensated.’

Kashmir’s apple gardens have spread over thousands of acres and support thousands of workers. Wahid Ahmed, a farmer from South Shobian district, said, “Many generations of Kashmiris have been cultivating apples and walnuts. This is not only the question of money, but also the question of our existence. If the government does not take immediate action for our safety, we are concerned about our future.
