The federal government has increased the price of cotton seeds BG-II (Polgart-II). But on the other hand, the seed industry has expressed disappointment in this development. After the increase of ₹ 37 in Fiji-II cotton, its retail price has now risen to 1 901. The price for Fiji is 35 635 per pocket. But about this, the seed industry says that the cost will not be compensated by just ₹ 37. India Kisan Sabha (IX) has criticized the decision.
This increase is much lower than cost
The Indian Seed Industry Federation (FSII) refers to research -based agricultural companies in the country. FSI President Ram Gundiniya has spoken with an English newspaper ‘Business Line’ to increase the price of cotton seeds. Ka Undiniya says that Rs. ”
The price of cotton seeds increased from 1 751 to 4 864 in 2024 in 2016. Ram Ku Undiniya has now been raised to 1 901. This year’s annual growth rate is 1.8%. At this time, agricultural wages have increased by 120 per cent and fertilizer prices have doubled. In this way, the increasing cost of the cotton industry has ended the profit. “
Increasing pressure on the cotton industry
The FSI president said, “In the same period, the MSP of the cotton has increased by more than 70 per cent. We want the government to understand the ongoing crisis in the cotton sector and declare the more vast set of activities, including the proper seed price of cotton. “
The deficit may be in the market
At the same time, the Indian National Seed Association (NSAI), representing seed manufacturing companies, believes that new cotton prices are inadequate. NSAI President M Prabhakar Rao said, “This is not enough, because in the last 10 years we have only got 1 per cent CAGR growth. We have requested an increase of ₹ 150, but we have only got ₹ 37.” Prabhakar Rao hopes that this can lead to poor investment in research and development. “Inadequate investment in industry research and development can affect the growth of new types and lead to adequate seed production. This will cause a lack of market.”
‘Farmers get caught up in a deep crisis’
India Kisan Sabha has criticized the decision. IX General Secretary Viju Krishnan said, “This will be in a deep crisis. This increase should be seen in the context of a 5 per cent increase in 2023-24. On average, about 4.5 million packets are sold annually, who can imagine the great benefits earned by the seed companies.”
