The brief document revolutionized the Catholic relations with the Jews after centuries of persecution and lack of confidence.
The dialogue in the next two decades enabled Pope John Paul II to become the first Pontef to visit a church, and to give a speech about the main temple of Rome in 1986, when the Jews called “our older brothers”.
After years of tense relations, the Vatican and Israel signed a “basic agreement” in 1993 and exchanged full ambassadors the following year.
