The Punjab government has banned the sale of hybrid paddy seeds (non -pass rice) because they are sold at high prices. Due to these seeds, it is said on behalf of the government that the percentage of rice breaks during grinding. According to the government, the rice breaks more than the standards set by the Indian Food Corporation (FCI) by removing the outer salim and bran layers from the gooseberry (without the ground). But after this, farmers buy these seeds. Farmers have given two ahaj reasons behind the purchase of hybrid rice seeds by boycotting the barrier.
These seeds get high yields
Some farmers and experts from Punjab opposed the ban. According to the Indian Express Report, farmers say that the hybrid varieties provide significant benefits compared to the traditional varieties. This includes less time and high yield to cook. Farmers say that the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has created many short and medium varieties, but the seeds of hybrid rice are doing well with them.

During the Carif Marketing Session of 2024-25, rice millars throughout Punjab refused to accept the varieties of hybrid rice. The Millets argued that the otr rate of these varieties was less than the performance of the rice grinding process, which was made compulsory by the FCI. The FCI set at least 67 per cent OTR, according to Milners, from 60 per cent to 63 per cent of hybrid rice varieties.

Millers meet financial loss

In 2019, the Punjab Agriculture Department banned the selling of hybrid paddy seeds. On the other hand, experts say, instead of imposing arbitrary restrictions, the Punjab government should focus on regulating the sale of true and declared hybrid seeds.
