In almost all states of the country, the main rabi crop is harvested. At the same time, the good yield of wheat this year has brought a smile to the faces of Haryana’s farmers, and many farmers have said that 24-29 quintals per acre are 18-22 per acre than the average of the previous year. Farmers said the total production had increased despite the adverse weather at the beginning of the crop. But farmers are demanding an increase in minimum support price (MSP), referring to the increased cost of agriculture.

Increase of wheat yields

The initial figures of crop harvesting tests of the Agricultural and Farmers’ Welfare Department support this, and the average yield of about 24 quintals per acre, which is more than the average yield of the previous season, a quintal per acre.

MSP needed to increase

Anil, a farmer of Duckwala Roren, said that he had produced about 25 quintal wheat per acre with wheat crop on his two and a half acres. Last year, only 21 quintal wheat was produced per acre, he said.

However, Anil expressed concern over the increasing cost. He said the minimum support price (MSP) for the Quint was Rs 2,425. But if a farmer takes the land for leasing, it costs Rs 60,000 to Rs 70,000 per year and the cost of input is Rs 10,000 to 15,000 per year. He urged the government to increase the MSP according to the rising input cost.

Another farmer Rajinder also expressed a similar view. After harvesting wheat from three acres, he received 25 quintals per acre. Yes, this year’s yield is good, but agriculture is expensive, he said. The MSP should be extended to show reality of real ground.

Another farmer said that Jittendra Stodi said he had cultivated wheat in 33 acres and had an average of 27 quintals per acre. As the cost of agriculture is increasing, the government should consider the increase in MSP. Similarly, another farmer, Rajinder Singh cultivated wheat on 24 acres, and yields an average of 29 quintals per acre.

Beyond the production target this year

Experts of the Kurnal -based Indian Wheat and Barley Research Institute (IIWBBB) are hoping that India will cross the goal of wheat production this year. ITPR Director Dr Ratan Tiwari said, “Last year, the country was produced by 113.29 million tonnes of wheat last year.

Dr. Tiwari said the weather conditions are often favorable for wheat cultivation this season. He said, “There were a little fluctuations at maximum temperature in February and March, but it had not had a significant impact on the crop as we accepted the type of climate friendly wheat.”
