Despite the US opposition, the European Union continues with digital law.
At a time when misinformation and interference with democratic countries has increased worldwide, the Digital Services Act (LSD) and the EU Digital Markets Act (LMT) are conceived online and not to control it. The Vice President of the European Commission’s technology and democracy has stressed before the criticism of the United States.
“If we look at the EU or the economy, we would like to ensure that the digital environment is safe, legitimate and democratic,” henna Virgunen said.
Recently, both LSD and LMT have been criticized, especially Donald Trump’s leading advisor Elon Musk. However, Virgunen considers that the laws are reasonable and equal. The rules are very reasonable because they operate in the European Union and applies equally to all who have business activities. Therefore, the same standards apply to European, US and Chinese companies, ”Virgunen continued.
The Vice President also highlighted the importance of transparency and open civilization when regulating the contents. “The user knows why he is shown a certain content. In addition, he has the opportunity to decide whether he wants to see it,” he continued.
There are currently ten inquiries on large online sites, including companies such as X, Dictoc or meta.
It is clear that individuals do not chase or control freedom of expression, but it ensures that all actors are compliant with EU standards. As explained, most digital sites cooperate with the European Commission because of the importance of the European market. In addition, he added: “We are establishing obligations so that the sites can set up a series of procedures to ensure that the proper risk assessment of sites is marked. We regulate the content.”
False information campaigns in elections
False information campaigns during the election period are another key point for Virgun. For example, a recent investigation in Romania revealed that the use of fare bots in Dictok to raise a nationalist presidential candidate. Virgunen pointed out the importance of preparing elections with national officials and online sites. He argued that “the sites are not handled or misused, are transparent during the election process.”
Despite the strong opposition of technician Elon Mask, who is qualified as a “intimidating campaign,” he still believes that the European Union will continue with the LSD and LMT. “We want to make sure that big companies are not dominated and that they are not misusing the market power,” he said.
Internal protection
As for internal security, Virgunen acknowledged that there are plenty of threats you need to prepare. “We need to be prepared for many kinds of threats, that is why it is necessary to cooperate with the elbow side,” he concluded.
The European Commission has proposed a new strategy called Protee, which is aimed at increasing EU resistance against hybrid threats by fighting important infrastructure security, internet security reinforcement and online threats.
