The Riviara Maya beaches, which are damaged by coastal erosion, expands the rehabilitation efforts to the Quintana Rupees to Nature -based solutions.
The project is retrieving 12 kilometers of beach in Kankan, about 3 kilometers in Kosumal, and 6 kilometers in Puerto Morolos – the beaches have shrunk or disappeared due to extreme weather events such as coastal growth and hurricanes.
The Minister of Environment and Environment and Environment, Escar Repora Akulara, said the coastal restoration is important to avoid negative impacts on tourism and protect the coastal environment.
Repora said that the State Environment Ministry (SEMA) is currently finalizing the technical details of the Environmental Impact Report (MIA). He said filler studies would be completed this month in the hope that the Federal Ministry of Environment approves the MIA before the summer holiday season begins.
With the new MIA, the government is seeking to expand beach restructuring efforts across the Riviara Maya. The current environmental consent is only 12 kilometers long in Canganon.
“In conjunction with researchers, we are trying to expand the MIA to areas showing the largest erosion of the beaches,” Repora said.
According to the satellite research and surveillance program conducted by the University of Mexico (UNAM) from 2020, Puerto Moros shows the biggest erosion of the beaches in Mexican Caribbean. In the most severely eroded areas, water has reached hotel structures. Experts say there is no way to restore the hills as the beach disappeared in those places.
Visent Ferrera Acosta, the president of the Sustainable Travel Consultant Suster, said that it is important to establish sandalization projects in areas where the remaining hills are still restored.
In terms of this project, Repora said the government was evaluating two scenes. The first is to identify the sandbanks to rebuild the beach. The second display is to rebuild the dunes damaged by the hotel and condominium advances. Rebora said the government was consulting with experts and Cuban government representatives to evaluate the possibility of sandalization.
“We cannot continue to fill the beach. We must propose natural -based solutions such as rebuilding the hills and restoration of coral reefs. All these components are considered.”
In addition to the coastal reconstruction, the project also includes strengthening coral reefs in target areas. Almost 60% of the reef environmental system has been severely damaged due to increasing sea temperature in recent years.
