Peruvian, Pope Liu spent the fourteenth years in the country of Andes as a missionary, before he was appointed Bishop of Chicoli in 2015.
Alexandra Sergan – the Vatican City
Pope Liu was 30 years old – then the former father – when he first climbed the soil of South America. After a step in the United States and residency in Rome, it was sent in 1985 to the Agustina Mission in Chulucanas, in the Piura section, north of Peru. Many round trips will follow it to the country of the Andes, until it was appointed as the Czechlu Bishop in 2015 by Pope Francis, and later as vice president of the Peruvian Episcopal Conference in 2018. Cardinal Robert Francis Peruviest was even on Peru the same year.
We talked about his career in the country with Cesar Peskaya, his 30 -year -old friend and was also his pastoral head in the Chicio diocese. Currently, Piscaya works in Bogota for the Episcopal Council in Latin America (Ceram), at the center of pastoral work programs and networks. The family’s father, Liu fourteen describes as a deep humanitarian man, is a permanent sensitive to the facts and suffering of the Peruvian people.
How did you receive your date news? Have you had news since the Chicololi diocese?
I felt very deep and happy to find out. I am currently in Bogota, where I work at the Episcopal Conference in Latin America, so I was not in my city, Czechle, when I knew about his choice. But the news that came to me from my family and friends was full of joy, amazement and enthusiasm. People turned to the main arena, to the cataract yard … they were overwhelmed by emotion. This is how this news was received by that small city that it suffered, but it is wonderful in affection and friendship.
Did they meet in Czechle? How did they start working together?
I have known Roberto since 1996. We have participated in many years of missionary experience of Oguminists. Then, in 2017, I went back to Czechle, and when I went back, he asked me if we could work together in the diocese. This is the way we collaborated until December 2022, when he was the roof of Chicoli.
When I invited me to work in the pastoral diocese, he told me two main things. the first: “Cesar, we have to work in unity”; The second: “Cesar, our people, our society, our diocese needs to understand that it is important to work a shared responsibility.”. This was the trend that Monsignor Roberto wanted to give. He told me: Do not forget the Council (the second Vatican); we must create the process of renewing and structuring our diocese. “.
This was the origin of the “Renewal and Facultant Project for the Diocese”, the pastoral mission that entrusted me.
Was it difficult to assume that the task is an ordinary person?
It is a very good question, because it allows me to say something essential about the new fourteenth Pope Liu. He knew very well the context of the diocese and knew how difficult this experience was, because it was a significant written environment: Czechlue had more than sixty years of the presence of OPUS Dei. His work has a more “reduced” or focus on external aspects and rituals – of course, of course – but with little interest in social, to meet other parties.
They understand Monsignor Prevost this challenge from the beginning, and support me from the first moment. He invited me to be part of the church in which the priests, religious and secular will work a shared responsibility. It was very important. Yes, it was difficult, but not impossible, because we also believe in the work of the Holy Spirit in his church, especially in the Chicli Church.
For example, when we started this pastoral work, there were very few ordinary people in the mission and mission tasks. In the diocese, those who participated intermittently on the parish councils were. But, with the support of the project we promoted, he made a decision to form teams of pastoral animation. These teams were, mostly, for more than eight ordinary people in the parish.
If more than fifty dioceses are hit with this number, a large amount of ordinary people who actively participated during the time was obtained by the bishop.
She accompanied the topic of the role of women in the Chiclio diocese. Is this work related to the pastoral driving style in Liu XIV?
The desire to involve secularism – and we know that the majority of women – is part of a process Pastoral Its money. We have seen a church focusing on priests, with a little active participation, and above all, very masculine. Despite the presence of women in many pastoral spaces – such as Christian education, mass or training – no real responsibilities or spaces have been assigned to discrimination and decision.
The new structures created, such as the narrow, vice -and diocese teams, were pastoral spaces, where decisions were made with the priest or bishop. Not only promoted these spaces, but also accompanying them, and actively merged many women.
In addition, women documented important tasks within ecclesiastical life. During a bishop, Cáritas Chiclayo was directed by a woman, Janinna Sesa córdova. It was also at the Episcopal service that the Catholic Catholic University of Santo Torbo chose a woman as a woman: Patricia Julia Campus Olzakal. That is, he began assigning women’s responsibilities in the main places, from the pastoral logic that recognizes its professionalism and service to the church.
What place does the Synod occupy his vision of the church? Is it inspired by Pope Francis?
I think Monsignor Roberto, today, Pope Liu XIV, lived the Synod since his first missionary experience in Chulucanas, in the Piura section (1985-1986). From the first moment, they understood that the other – the needy, the poor, the person who suffers – requires his approach. This position was present from the beginning in his mission, in his way of living the pastoral ministry.
When he reached the diocese, he promoted this social dimension of the Gospel, this commitment to solidarity, wherever it is. The ears, when necessary, were not concept or slogan inspired by Pope Francis, but rather an embodiment of his first steps as a missionary, which was deepened along his way as a measure.
In pastoral driving style, how do you contact others?
He is a dialogue. Anti -advice of the sheikhdom and also create space to meditate with his priests. In the diocese teams, where the secularists participated, we evaluated the pastoral path together. His style is very horizontal: listening, dialogue and making decisions in the company.
How do you describe your personality?
Monsignor Prevost is a close person, becomes a friend. If you have to cry, cry with you; If you have to laugh, laugh with you; If you have to dream, you are dreaming of you too. Share even moments of despair. He is not afraid to touch the flesh of the other: welcomes, embraces, and he moves deeply with our reality.
He knows how to listen, and he is a person who cares about what the other feels; He really cares for those around him.
What do you say that your main virtues?
I would like to say that, first, warn him. He has this virtue: He is a deep wise man. It also has a strong personality, virtuous force. When he undertakes something, he takes it to the end. He is very disciplined in his studies, in his prayers. He knows how to be with everyone, and knows how to organize his time for others.
But this does not take away enthusiasm, creativity, joy or sensitivity. He is a very sensitive person. I think the clearest expression of that was seen when the crowd was first received as the new Pope. It was transferred, on the verge of tears. He is a very emotional person, like any of us, weight and depth of tasks and great obligations.
In his first speech as the Pope, he talked about the Senodal Church that is moving together towards peace. How did you work for peace in Peru during her time as vice president of the Episcopal Conference?
When we worked closely in the diocese, and the deputy presidency of the Episcopal Conference in Peru, he remained very close to us. We have called us – to the secularists, as well as to political actors – to direct joint responsibility through democracy and social participation, always in serving the public good.
“There is no peace without justice, there is no peace without dialogue.” “They are expressions that are constantly shared to build peace wherever they are.” Today it still invites us to participate in responsibility and commitment as it intentionally. It is very clear when St. Augustine calls: “With you I am a Christian, because I am bishop”. This means that we are all part of the church, and from there the real efforts to leave peace.
