The reaction of banks and consulting with the 10 % tariff announced by the United States of Brazilian products, bearing in mind that Brazil has survived the most severe measures that were applied to other countries. Although the government and the productive sector have expressed concern, analysts see space to achieve gains in international trade.
Consequently, it is possible for Brazil to gain competitiveness and be able to transfer some pieces in favor of the new international trade chess, which won another chapter with the “tariff” announced by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, in what was called “Liberation Day”, on liberation day.
This positive perception of analysts has not been adopted, but neither by the government nor the productive sector. The positions issued after the announcement in Washington expressed their concern and inheritance. In a joint statement on ITAMARTY and the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services, Brazil believed that Trump violated the United States’ obligations to the World Trade Organization (WTO), which is not excluded by the Brazilian government.
In addition to saying that Brazil insists on dialogue with the American government, the National Union of Industry (CNI) stated that the mission of entrepreneurs in the sector will visit the United States in the first half of May, with the aim of strengthening relations and searching for solutions of common importance. “Of course, we are interested in any action that makes our products enter the market as important as the United States, which is the main in Brazilian industry exports,” says Ricardo Albani, the head of the entity.
By imposing a 10 % tax, Brazil was part of the group of less affected countries in the tariff of the Republic of Trump. Economies like the United Kingdom, Chile, Australia, Colombia, Torke, Argentina, Peru, among others. The new rates enter into force on Saturday, April 5.
For former Foreign Trade Minister Wilber Parale, Vice President and Minister of Industry Geraldo Alkain worked to the United States Minister of Commerce, Howard Lottenic. “It has become less worse for Brazil than expected. I think there are the advantages of the government, especially the Alakin, who held two meetings with Howard Lootnick. They talked a lot about imposing taxes on ethanol. So, I think Brazil ended up leaving less bad than it could have been.”
In the same line, lawyer Carlos Lubo, a partner in Arnold and Porter, based on New York, is a 10 % “very low” percentage. “The United States suggests a very important rearrangement of international trade, and I think it can benefit from Brazil,” Lebu says, in an interview with the broadcast. It is clear that there is another tariff that affects Brazil, such as aluminum, steel and cars.
According to the ARNOLD & Porter partner, Brazil can benefit from the markets in which they compete with the United States, where successful countries will impose revenge definitions – such as agriculture. There is another movement that can be positive for the country that comes from reorganizing global supply chains, as Brazil attracts companies due to a lower rate than other countries – such as China, imposing 34 % taxes.
“Brazil will eventually win new markets or expand their performance. This has happened in the past: Brazil has increased participating in animal protein, and I think this will happen again; so it may be useful for Brazil.”
According to the chief economist in Barclays in Brazil, Roberto Simsky, Brazil can be injured due to the impact of mutual definitions on other countries in the global economy. “The indirect impact may be greater than the slowdown in the global economy, especially China. This Brazil may harm,” he says.
