In a statement reaffirming the situation adopted during the Donald Trump administration, the United States repeated its recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara. The confirmation occurred after a meeting in Washington between the Moroccan Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourta, and the Foreign Minister, Marco Rubio.

As I mentioned the official account of Moroccan diplomacy, this support confirms the position that President Trump made to King Mohamed VI in December 2020, when he issued a presidential decree that officially recognized the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco on the entire Sahara region.

During the meeting, Marco Rubio stressed that the United States continues to consider the Moroccan self -independence proposal as “serious, credible and realistic”, and described it as “the only possible base for a fair and lasting solution” to the regional conflict.

The Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Tami Bruce, likewise, said that the President of the United States urges the parties to prove “without delay” based on the proposal of the singer’s autonomy, that the American administration continues to believe that the original autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the only possible solution.

The United States also repeated its willingness to facilitate international efforts to achieve a mutual acceptable solution, as part of this approach.

This reaffirmation occurs in a geopolitical context in which the opposition of Western Sahara is still the issue of international attention, especially at the United Nations, where no final decision was reached before all the parties concerned.
