European Commissioner for Climate Work, Wopke Hoektra, conducted an interview with Cnn moneyHighlighting the urgency to reduce global temperature progress.
Hoektra highlighted three main areas for the success of the conference: climate procedures, carbon pricing and climate financing.
He praised the last Brazilian carbon pricing legislation and stressed the importance of international financing for climate operations, noting that Europe is responsible for about a third of international climate financing.
The Commissioner stressed the importance of maintaining the increase in global temperature less than 1.5 ° C: “It is extremely important to limit this to 1.5 degrees Celsius, because if not the case, the damage to citizens, companies and the environment in Brazil, in Europe, but frankly around the world, will be huge.”
Hoektra acknowledged that achieving this goal will be a challenge, taking into account the levels of current carbon dioxide emissions, but insisted on the need for the utmost efforts to achieve this.
Global challenges and opportunities
Commenting on the departure of the United States from the Paris Agreement, Hoektra expressed its regret for the decision, as the country’s decisive role was highlighted as the second largest source and the largest economy in the world.
However, it has been positively published that many American states and companies are still committed to climatic goals, regardless of the position of the federal government.
On the organization of COP30 in Brazil, the Commissioner praised the country’s efforts: “Brazil, in my opinion, is doing a great job in all elements related to the content.”
He realized the logistical challenges inherent in organizing an event of this size, but he expressed his confidence in the ability of Brazil to hold a successful conference.
COP30 is not Brazil
The Commissioner concluded to emphasize the global importance of COP30: “Humanism cannot carry luxury in this policeman. The problem is very big.”
He expressed optimism about the role of Brazil in leading decisive discussions on climate mitigation, adaptation and financing, and highlighting the conference’s capabilities to inspire and encourage climate measures all over the world.
