Return to Negia, as brothers

The importance of the first ecumenical council in the International Theological Committee document.

Andrea Tornelli

Returning to Naja after 1700 years, during the jubilee in 2025, means primarily to meet brothers with all Christians in the world: The recognition of faith that came out of the first ecumenical council shares it in reality not only by the Eastern Churches, the Orthodox Churches and the Catholic Church, but it is also common in environmental reform societies. This means that the gathering of brothers about what is really necessary, because what unites us is stronger than what separates us: “Together, we believe in God one and triple, in Christ the true man and God, the true and God, in salvation in Jesus Christ, according to the writings that read in the church and under the movement of the Holy Spirit. Together, we believe in the church, baptism, the resurrection of dead and eternal life. ” This is one of the central points in The Document of “Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Savior”Published by the International Theological Committee to commemorate Nick.

One of the goals of the first ecumenical council was to set a joint date for the celebration of Easter, a controversial issue already in the first centuries Church: Some celebrated it with the Jewish lil, in 14 months of April, while others on Sunday following the loss of the Jews. Nicea contributed to finding a joint date when the next Sunday sets to the first moon in the spring as a date for celebrating Easter. The situation has changed in the sixteenth century with the reform of the Gregorio XIII calendar: Western churches are now calculated date according to this calendar, while the east continues to use the Julian calendar used throughout the church before the Gregorian reform. But it is important and prophet for all Christian churches to celebrate Easter on the same day on Nikia’s anniversary on the same day, on Sunday, April 20. It is a sign and hope to reach as soon as possible to an acceptable date everyone.

In addition to the ecumenical side, there is the second aspect that makes this return to the current Nicea. Indeed, in the past decade of the last century, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger pointed to a real challenge to Christianity that “the new Arianisy”, that is, the increasing difficulty in realizing the deity of Jesus as it is announced in the Christology of the Church: He is considered a wonderful man, revolutionary, exceptional teacher, but not God. However, there is another danger, which was also emphasized in the new document, which is exactly the mirror and the opposite risks, that is, to obstruct the acceptance of the full humanity of Christ. Jesus can experience fatigue, feelings of sadness and abandonment, as well as anger. In fact, the son chose to live our humanity completely. In it, in the humanity that he expressed at all times, in leaving it “harmful” to reality, in his step before the suffering of those who found, in his saying yes to the requests of the poor who asked for help, we see in power what it means to be a human being, and at the same time, we see reflecting the strength of the divinity that chose to meet and empty it to save us and save us.
