Breast cancer is the most common type of women in Brazil and the world. For this year, 73,000 new cases are estimated in the country. Its impact, financial and psychological, huge – forming one of the largest public health challenges today.
The October Rose campaign, which started in the 1990s, plays an essential role in awareness. But we must remember: the health care of the breast should be continuous, not only in one month of the year. Therefore, World Cancer Day is an excellent history to remember this topic.
Breast imaging is the main examination exam. When the tumor is detected early, even without symptoms, there is an opportunity of up to 90 % to heal.
Therefore, prevention should be a daily commitment. A balanced diet, regular physical activity and maintenance maintenance greatly reduces individual risks. Less than 10 % of cases are associated with genetic genetic syndrome, which enhances the importance of healthy habits.
Technology and progress in diagnosis and treatment
It is already possible already a genetic evaluation at lower costs, which helps to identify women who need a personal tracking. In addition, new treatments are available in Brazil, such as PARP inhibitors (for women who suffer from mutations in BRCA1, BRCA2 and ADCS genes, antibodies associated with chemotherapy drugs that work directly on cancer cells, such as “Trojan Horse”.
Artificial intelligence also gained space, which helped radiologists discover suspicious lesions during photo exams.
Inequality in reaching the abdication of early diagnosis
Despite progress, Brazil faces an unequal scenario. In the private sector, there is a rapid access to mammograms, dazzling, surgery and modern treatments. Indeed in Sus, where most of the population is concentrated, many women face lists and delays for exams and treatments. This reality makes early diagnosis difficult and directly affects the survival rate. It is necessary to strengthen general policies to ensure equality to all Brazilians.
Prevention is still the best option
What can women do to reduce the risk of breast cancer? Regular consultation with the doctor, conducting tracking tests according to professional directions, practicing physical activity, maintaining a balanced diet, avoiding weight gain and searching for information from reliable sources. The best prevention strategy remains.
