If we only look at general crime statistics, we may think that Portugal is safe, because there was a 5% reduction in the number of gross criminal origins. However, this reading is cheating. The decline in common crimes is obvious, resulting in lower police action on the ground, not a real progress in the country’s security.

In the early months of 2024, security forces faced the period of deletion and demonstrations, claiming better wages and working conditions. At this time, the police were less likely to prevent crimes. If the security forces were operating in full potential throughout the year, the number of public crime may have been high, denying that Portugal became a safe country.

But the most anxiety is the concept of insecurity, which is constantly growing among citizens. Every day the news comes from severe crimes, making sense of impact. This fear is not only based on social communications: violent crimes and the actual increase in theft and theft crimes leads to the increasing manner of the Portuguese. Citizens lose confidence in the Justice Organization when the robbery becomes common and the streets appear to be less secure.

What we can do to replace this data is to strengthen the police nearby and ensure that security forces are more visible and continuous in the streets, public transport and more vulnerable areas. In addition, more investment in the police media based on human resources and equipment, so that they can function more efficiently and safely.

Another action is to make the penalties difficult for some crimes and crimes repeatedly, to ensure that the punishment is not continued. The feeling of punishment is one of the most contributing to crimes, and the permitted justice situation worsens.
Finally, it is necessary to consider public security as a national priority. The struggle against the crime cannot be a statistical problem that has been analyzed once a year. This should be a standard policy, because if nothing is done, the crime will continue to grow and the concept of insecurity will worse.
