A farmer from Odisha has sought a share of seed commercialization. In fact, this farmer’s desi paddy has gained a variety of celebrities. In such a situation, if this action is successful, this is the first example of the safety efforts to be carried out under the initiative of the Plant and Farmers’ Rights Protection Authority (BPV and FRA).
What are the highlights of this rice
According to the newspaper The Hindu report, farmer Jayant Kumar Jena has written to BPV & FRA leader Trilochan Mahabhadra. Jenna has the official record of a variety of paddy Kionjar Kalamba created by his father. He has requested the right shares in profit from the commercialization of the seeds.
Kiojar Kalampa is a type of rice to endure large diseases and pests under farm conditions in coastal odisha. Its tolerance has made it popular among other farmers. At the same time, this type of paddy resists or falls, reacts to fertilizer and is suitable for sowing time and late. Apart from all this, it is one of the first traditional types of farmers in India, which is integrated into the proper seed distribution chain.
Son got a record in 2015
This kind of paddy was first registered under the name of Anirudh Jenna, a farmer of the village of Kuhalia, Odisha’s Anandpur constituency. It was officially released by the State Seed Subcommittee following the recommendation of the Directorate of Agriculture and Food Production of Odisha. Later, the Government of India announced this type in 2015. However, after Jenna’s death due to Govid -19, the recent record has been transferred to his son Jayant Jena. The State Seed Testing Laboratory (SSTL) played an important role in the production of seeds of Kijar Calampa or genetically pure seeds. Orissa Agricultural Technology University (OUAT) took charge for seed production. At the same time, the Odisha State Seed Corporation (OSSC) and private companies are marketing this type.
Production of seeds of many thousands of quintal
Jena said, “It is understood that OSSC alone has produced and distributed more than 87,000 quintals of this type of certified seeds. This refers to adequate business usage and profit from the relevant agencies. The head of the BPV & FRA says many farmers are profitable by registering with power. In such a situation, if there is any request from Jayant Gena, the authority will certainly provide the convenience of sharing profits according to the guidelines. If the Odisha government issues BPV & FRA instructions in this regard, the Zena family can get the benefit of lakhs of rupees every year.
How did Kala Samba address
In 2006-07, the Odisha Agriculture Department discovered the Jajar Kalamba paddy during the seed Germmplas’s survey. The survey was conducted under efforts to prepare a list of local paddy and famous varieties. The department lists 1,070 rice varieties and 200 famous varieties after the survey. Odisha has made its kind of special effort in India to protect the traditional varieties collected from farmers and produced a genetic bank. Traditional rice seeds are protected in temperature and humidity controlled systems to keep it safe for 50 years.
Former District Agriculture Officer Chakrathar Panda said, “Anirudh Jena first gave me this type. I was very impressed by its ability and aspect and took it to a government set up to enrich it. It provides high yields and is flexible to the uncertainty of climate change. Panda played an important role in registering Kejer Kalamba with BPV and FRA.
One of the 780 rice types
Kioner Kalamba is one of the 780 rice varieties of Odisha, which is recorded in BPV and FRA. The scientific process of registering the types is very difficult. Panda said, ‘We have given a detailed description of each type of 62 signs. Each rice type of paddy and BPV and Fra Jean Bank provided one and a half kilos of seeds for their safety. All local rice varieties were tested for DUs (individuality, uniformity and stability).
Yield seven thousand in one acre
He said that local varieties have been given more importance as they implement the development of new types of cognitive and prolonged types. He said that the pure power of Kodar Kalamba was first chosen, which gives an average yield of 7,000 kg per hectare. Due to its resistance to organic stress, more approval was given among farmers. After several field trials, it was released by the State Government in 2013 and was later announced by the center.
