Farmers who cultivate onion in Nashik, Maharashtra, are very upset over the continuous fall prices these days. At the same time, a section of these farmers now started exporting the onion crop directly. A new feature of onion exports has been brought out for Nashik farmers. For the first time, the local farmers here sent the first cargo from 30 tonnes of the Middle East without direct participation of traders.
No more tension of the profit range
The Indian Express, citing the best organization of farmers manufacturing companies (FBC) in the state, wrote that this season will be exported directly into the Gulf region without the participation of intermediaries or traders. This means that farmers will get the best income, and with the contribution of traders, exporters or commission agents, they do not have to face the problems of the low profit range.
New opportunities for farmers
Eknath Sunab, a farmer from Naikan village in Bangar Taluk, said, “It has brought new opportunities to farmers. For farmers such as Sunab, the directors of the Kota Picket Farmer’s Producer Company (FBC), it is a distant dream because of access to export markets. Also, new possibilities will ensure new possibilities for farmers to follow the best farming systems to grow the best quality onions.
The right standard is also necessary
To qualify for exports, the size of the bulbs must be 55 mm -60 mm and they get the best price. He said, ‘Shipment requires a better quality product and a proper standard. This will help for a long time. Grading is how the product is divided according to the size. In Naikan, it has been possible by MahaFPC to achieve export markets for farmers who manufacture companies working in domestic markets.
First opportunity to export directly
Mahafisi Managing Director Yogesh Thorath said, “Nashik, Thrashiv, Ahilianagar and Pune districts are participating in 10 FBC exports. This is the first time we have exported directly. According to market experts, traders, exporters and commission agents usually buy onions from the entire market. Before sending goods from Mumbai to foreign markets, they are standardized. The Mahafisi’s goal is to ensure that the prices of farmers are properly increased to convert FPC into exporters.
Thorath said, ‘Middleman is less, it is best for the farmers. We have created 19,000 tonnes of storage in our series, and now our goal is to help them (FPC) export centers. The purpose of this process is to training farmers to develop the skills needed to package, pruning and standardization.
Mango will also be exported soon
According to Thorattin, it plans to increase it to vegetables and fruits. He said, along with onions this season, the Mahafisi would export 2,500 dozen mangoes in the Middle East markets. Indian onion is a stable market in the Middle East, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Bangladesh. However, Bangladesh has now banned the importation of Indian onions until June.
