Theobil Human-Killminot catchs a special high-tech camera of his 100,000 euros: “Today we are going to hunt methane emissions in Croatia. We will analyze the oil and natural gas plants.” Theo, a thermography technician, is working in the International KATF Climate Safety System, already carried out from Romania to Spain 500 “methane keseriaz”. He has always found what he is looking for.

Methane is a third of global warming gas. In comparison of 20 years, the methane can be 80 times more harmful than the CO2. Agriculture, poorly sealed landscapes and the use of fossil fuels are the main sources of humanity.

Methane content in the atmosphere increased by 260%compared to pre -industrialization. Since 2000, methane’s annual increase is equivalent to causing 350 million cars. If everything is the same, the earth can heat up to four degrees Celsius at the end of the century.

After all, methane escapes during extraction, change, transportation, distribution and storage of natural gas. This climate is released in the air by burning holes and torch, in addition to shrink stations with pipes and leaks.

The European Union, along with 159 partnerships, has promised to reduce methane emissions around the world between 2020 and 2030. The EU regulation on methane has been the case since the summer of 2024 wants to contribute to:

  • Companies need to better control their organizations.
  • Methane emission should be accurately recorded.
  • Regular burning is prohibited.
  • The leaks should be repaired immediately.

In front of a processing plant in Welika Ludina, Theo establishes her special camera in the city of Welika: “I fear we will find leaks in storage tanks. They are so bad.”

Instead of refunding the methane to the computer, there are companies that want to invest in fresh oil and gas deposits, which create more short -term benefits. The problem is usually in sub contractors or technical knowledge and good will.

Workers with anticus move between the valve wheels and the tanks. Theopil looks at the inventor: “A leak! What crazy! It’s intentionally; they know that they are releasing the gas.” The tank opens one of the caps. “They allow the oil to breathe,” explains the gatf expert Theo. The system is “ventilated” and methane is released in the air. “According to the new European regulation of methane, this practice is prohibited,” says Theo.

A few kilometers later, in the middle of the small city of Tuco Slo, we discovered a flame, extraction and a kind of “residue” of change. Suddenly, a whistle is heard and the flame reaches several meters high. “This is banned in the EU,” Raidra Theo. “Since August 2024, regulating the EU on methane and burning gas in this way is not legal.”

In Paris, I meet Domas de Olivera Fredariool, the methane expert of the International Energy Organization. How can you cover methane emissions? Olivera explains, “We have satellite data and the ground measurements are also needed.” Independent supervisory authorities must act.

But methane emission, are they correctly recorded? D Olivera is clearly about his position: “Methane emission from the oil and gas department officially communicates with 40 million tons of tonnes.

Why is methane so dangerous? From Olivera: “To date, about 30% of methane is responsible for global heat. The methane emissions from the fossil fuels are expected to decrease from here to 2030.
