In the first quarter of 2025, the import of cashews in the EU (EU) set a new record. A total of 42,850 tonnes of cashews were imported during this period, priced at about 273 million euros (about $ 300 million). This shows the increase in the amount 16% and 42% at the price, which is much higher than the same period of 2024.
The impact of the growing imports also showed India’s cashew exports, where the 8% increase in the first quarter of 2025 recorded a slight increase. However, Vietnam is the largest cashew supplier in the EU, which won 72% of the total imports.
FDA causes the strength of Vietnam
Beta Group Chairman J.K. According to Rajmohan Pillai, the Independent Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the EU has benefited Vietnamese exporters. Under this agreement, the import tax on cashew collapses has been reduced to zero, which can be sold by Vietnam at a very competitive price.

US fee turned into a matter of concern
Pillai said that the US has imposed 46% of cashew charges in Vietnam and 26% of cashews in India. Because of this, exporters must search for new markets such as the European Union, Japan and the Middle East. The United States is still a large cashew market, especially for Vietnam, but after the fee, new export contracts have not been made there.

Indian processors may get an increase
Vijayalakshmi Cashew Managing Partner Pratap Nair believes that some countries of the EU need the highest quality cashews, which can complete Indian processors. There are only a few processors in Vietnam that they can meet these standards.
Domestic demand and rising prices are challenging
However, despite this opportunity for India, the lack of domestic demand and the rising prices of cashew kernels is a major challenge. Because of this, experts are divided whether India can fully use this situation.
Overall, the demand for cashews in the EU has created a stir in the world market. India has a good chance to increase exports based on its quality and processing skills, but it will require strategic results.
