Mercedes Martin says not only the meteorologist, but what time he will do. It is a marine expert, science, spokesman and recently Antarctic. He has returned from one of the most transforming experiences of his life: Participation in the International Homeward Pound Program, the Global Woman Leadership, ends with a scientific period of scientific time to unite women leaders in science, technology, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STM).
We talk to her about leadership, climate change, sociality and purpose.
What is Antarctica that has no other places on the planet?Antarctica is the best global climate regulator. The planet’s fresh water contains 70%. Its shore accelerates global warming and changes the weather -controlling sea currents. Although I know many data for my exercise, it is great to see it with my eyes. Antarctica is the natural laboratory of the planet, one of the most vulnerable environmental systems that are most vulnerable to climate change, and is a clear indicator of the coming. Antarctica is an emergency call for action, and plastics in one place are not hospitalized and people live.

What is Homewart Binding, and what took you as a trip to Antarctica? It is an international leadership program for women in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine. For a year, we are incorporated into 124 women in the network of 23 different nationalities, all of which are training in the STEM fields. The project ends with a three -week trip to Antarctica, in which we reflect the social, political and environmental challenges of the current and future. The purpose is clear: expedite the change from different and joint leadership.
What women are participating in this world program? There are manager of researchers, science, politics, medical, engineers, biologists and maritime personnel … In my case, I join my work as a spokesman. My purpose is to accurately: to change knowledge to the public, to raise awareness, and make a real action.
What are you learning this experience? The most transformation of this project is undoubtedly inward. We start with a guidance that will help you redefine who we are, what our skills are, and how we can lead. For me, it was more powerful than in Antarctica. I understand that I am only a part of the planetary gear, but this fragment reveals that its own action is field.

What is your action and purpose?Communication. Turn scientific data into stories that can be rallying and mobilizing. I have come from the world of education, I have worked with the complex statements of the oceans, the environmental organizations and the atmosphere, but my profession is in translating that knowledge to the public. Do it objectively without warning, but impact.
Have you lived in the inequality situations for being a woman in your life?Yes, like many. I felt the question or embarrassment to be a woman in some situations in some cases. But I am lucky to find the places where I can fully create. What I don’t feel like that, I simply quit. I don’t want to continue to prove that I am worthy of being in the place where I am. But I know that you have to do a lot more to achieve true equality.
What differences do you see between the woman and the masculine leadership? This is not about excluding, but including. Culturally, the results are reserved for men. Women need to be confirmed with voice and acting ability, so that the new generation can be them. Diversity accelerates change, and that is what we need.

What is your legacy for women who have read us?Don’t tell them what they can do or not. They are ready for everything. To search, connect to your community, express themselves. Together we can make a real impact, most importantly: retain it over time.
