In a speech by the Paris Poor Studies Institute on Monday (31), Finance Minister Fernando Haddad conducted a critical assessment of the agreement between Mercosur and the European Union, saying that the bloc in South America will not have much to gain it on the economic side. According to the minister, the real value of the agreement will be in the context of politics and strategy.

He said: “If you ask any Brazilian diplomat if there is an explicit economic advantage that represents a leap in order to reformulate the southern cone, you will not find any condition that guarantees this.”

After more than 25 years, Mercosur and the European Union have made the official character of the free trade agreement between the blocs. However, in order to be valid, the treaty must still be approved by the European Parliament and faces resistance from the French economic sectors in particular for progress.

During the discussion, Haddad also pointed out that the agreement could be a counter -point for global crushing, the United States and China Championship, preventing countries from forcing aspects of this geopolitical clash.

“The main goal is to provide an alternative to the pole bilateral world, seeking not to fall. Because the duo itself enhances the speech of intolerance,” he explained.

“Whenever we mourn pluralism, the more we have to return to the times of the war we will get. It will not bring this to the planet.”

Haddad criticized the reduction in the negotiations, which they say are lost in sectoral details. “Europe is discussing” winning the winning meat, the loss of sugar, “he said, but the game is bigger: it avoids migrations and wars.”

The minister also pointed out that the developed countries use “anti -protection as environmental” and are called “hypocrisy” to punish the Brazilian environmental progress for the use of fossil energy.

“Rich countries” use the carbon rate in imports as a commercial weapon, not to protect the environment. It is a hypocrisy: punishing green steel for Brazil during the resumption of production of fossil energy. Europe wants to invite the Brazilian photovoltaic dams to impose our steel taxes.

The head of the economic team also indicated that 90 % of the Brazilian energy matrix is renewable, in contrast to the resumption of oil and gas projects in Europe.

On climate financing, Haddad pointed to the violation of international promises.

He said: “They promised $ 100 billion to forests and did not give a single fils,” explaining that this stimulates the establishment of the TFFs of the tropical forest (TFF), a Brazilian mechanism that converts donations into permanent investments.

The minister compared slow climatic measures and the speed of conflict financing: “Money appears for war in days; for weather, withdrawal for decades.”

In the end, Haddad strengthened the need for a new position for the international community.

He concluded that “the climate crisis requires a courageous political class-we do not possess it today,” saying that the Mercosur Agreement, despite its economic restrictions, represents an important step in building the multiplicity of the most effective parties to face global challenges.
