The Punjab government has banned hybrid rice cultivation citing groundwater levels and poor grinding recovery. However, the FSI rejected the Punjab government’s claims. The organization suggests that the hybrid varieties give high yields, save water and reduce straw burning. It is true that after the ban, farmers are more interested in hybrids. Farmers say that hybrid stories provide more benefits and increase their income. Learn the real reason for the attraction of the farmers for hybrid varieties.
Water saving claim
Farmers of Punjab are growing up ‘saw’ types of 7501 and 7301. These stories are cooked, including nursery period in 125 to 130 days. According to the farmers, these types of seeds are about 35 kg less than 35 kg due to their small crop rotation. In such a situation, there is good water saving. According to farmers, hybrid varieties offer more benefits than traditional varieties. Also, it takes less time to cook and the yield is high.
Benefit up to 14 thousand per acre!
Many small and medium varieties have been created by the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), although farmers are prioritizing hybrid rice seeds. He says that hybrid stories are still better than traditional types. Quoting a farmer Baldev Singh, he has written a media report, ‘These varieties cook fast and save water. But the most important thing is that 5-6 quintals yield more than an acre compared to the remaining types;
According to the farmer, he gets 35-36 quintals per acre and sometimes more yields. This means that he earns clearly from 13,000 to 14,000 rupees per acre.
Millers harm
During the Carif Marketing Session of 2024-25, Rice Millers refused to follow the varieties of hybrid rice throughout Punjab. The Millets argued that the otr rate of these varieties was less than the performance of the rice grinding process, which was made compulsory by the FCI. The FCI has set at least 67 percent OTR. Milres said otr of hybrid rice ranges from 60 percent to 63 percent. Milres says they should experience financial losses due to this disadvantage.
Ban was banned in 2019
By 2024, the Punjab government had to be forced to save Miller after much opposition. In 2019, the Punjab Agricultural Department has completely banned the sale of hybrid rice seeds. However, the ban was a short period of time, and changes in selling hybrid seeds were officially announced by the Agricultural Center in Punjab.
