I have a lot in my heart, but there is one I hold inside with special gratitude. A young woman was welcomed, after years of addiction and abandonment, in a society. I met the testimony of Father Agustino as soon as I arrived at Naples. Those who have a gift from his knowledge, and perhaps his presence as a hate, talk about a wise, wise man, a priest of people and the people.

We are called to be signs of God’s tenderness, to be by people, to wipe tears, to hold tired hands. Today’s priest needs the smell of streets, and lives among people, with people, hoping the place of resignation. Father Agustino did to the end, and that is why today he was distinguished: because he was reliable.

We have always urged us to be free and freedom, which embodies the style of Jesus Christ. Is it really possible, given the formation of contemporary societies, to put this freedom into practice?

If possible. This is not easy, but it is possible. Even today, at a time it seems to be rewarded for those who raise the voice more or follow the easy consensus, you can be free in the Bible.

To follow this is to remain loyal to the heart, choose meekness as a power, forgive the response, and consciousness as a compass. It is a freedom that has a price, of course, especially if you look at life with your eyes from success at any price or race. But this is the only freedom that makes us really a human being, because he is born of love and is measured in the gift.

Inequality in Italy is increasingly worry. What is the way to try to overcome them?

The first thing is to listen to those who have no sound. Inequality is overcome when recovering dignity, not just helping. That is why we need a policy that looks at faces, not numbers. This is a concept that will never stop reference: behind statistics, there are stories, eyes, hearts that require dignity, nursery, care!

But the social dimension is closely related to personal transformation: we must stop thinking only about the same benefit, to start participation, to give up something for the public good. Good, even a person who translates into structural options capable of reforming the community, always part of the heart that has been touched.

In your opinion, is the race justified when re -setting some leaders in Europe?

I think peace is not built by collecting peoples, but disarming hearts. I understand fears and geopolitical tensions, but we cannot get the idea that the war is inevitable.

All the euro spent in the weapon is removed from schools, health and poor. It is an option. True security does not come from strength, but from justice, education and dialogue.

As the Bible says, the person who takes the sword will perish with the sword. We, as a church, must be the prophets of peace, even when it is uncomfortable.
