Arangorn: Pervost returned to Augustine to Cuba, and today leads Pedro’s boat

“I knew the new Pope 20 years ago.” These are the words of Monsignor Emilio Arangorine Evere, the Holgoyn bishop in Cuba, when the Vatican news tells his first meeting with Pope Liu XIV today. The meeting that prompted immediate and permanent fruits, because in that far away in 2005, was accompanied by Cardinal Jaime Ortega, the head of Havana’s bishops and placed in the Public House of Representatives of Agustinos in Rome, Robert Francis Brevost asked, then before, to return to Cuba. It was achieved, because after a year, first, in the blindness of Avila, then in Porto Badri (Holgoen), and finally, in Havana, the Order of St. Augustine managed to return to the performance of his service to the Church and the Cuban community, in the parish, the social and cultural field.

In fact, he has never listened to vigilance and active, and he did not wait a long time to return to that distant island, where his brothers Augustine arrived in 1588, after several fluctuations and specifications, he is no longer there. This is what Monsignor Aranguren with us shared with us, that first meeting, and then visited in 2008 to the Holguin diocese, especially for the diocese of Puero Badri and also, the last meeting, a year ago, was already a governor of Dicasteria of Bishops, in Mayagüez, Purto Rico, and in Rome, last September, along with two participants.

Monsignor Aranguren, how was his first meeting with Robert Brevost – today Pope Liu fourteenth – and how did he reach the diocese of Holgoen?

For several years, being the Cienfuegos Bishop, I was the Secretary -General of the Catholic Bishop in Cuba, even shortly after the appointment of Pope Benedict XVI, Holgwin Bishop. In 2005, and even as a secretary, I traveled to Rome with Cardinal Jaime Ortega, president of Havana, who was the president of our conference, and we were welcomed as guests in the Public House of Representatives to San Agoustine, who is in front of Plaza de San Pedro. While I met the former general, Fry Robert Brevost, and at several moments, we share both food and dinner. I remember that in addition to many members of the General Council, there was also the Maltés Prosper GRCCH, who was residing with his brothers Augustine. The former general also presented the possibility and asked that Augustine be present again in Cuba. I explained that in 1968 I was a student of Father John Manif, the last Augustine in Cuba, and that he was sent to Peru, where he died. There I knew that he had announced the servant of God. Two years after that meeting, Augustine returned to Cuba, but in 2008 they already came to the diocese of Holgawin. First, they founded in my blindness to Avila and shortly after that they came to the Porto Badri diocese. In a way that this meeting generates this fruit.

Monsignor Aranguren, what can highlight Leo XIV, as a person, as a religious person, or tell us about a story?

In 2008, Pope Liu fourteenth traveled today to Cuba to visit his brothers Augustine and moved to the Porto Badri diocese (Holgowin’s diocese), 700 km from Havana. The cat’s house attached to the parish was under reform, and the former general was welcomed in a family home during the three days of his stay. Monsignor Aranguren, how do you expect and how do you see this pontificate?

Imagine, it’s difficult as I hope this Pontificate. All as a church is part of a historical and pastoral stage that started with San Juan twenty -third at the end of the year 58, and in a special way, when the second Vatican Council was held. At that time, the Pope expressed that it is necessary for the church to open windows to enter the fresh air, to enter the reality of the surrounding world. Why? Since a specific stage, a stage of the Cold War, was living, the post -warship stage, and therefore, the world will also discuss within the church, what the Church presented.
