The General Accounting Committee of the Haryana Legislative Assembly (PAC) has attracted attention to illegal water connections and serious issues related to water quality in the state. According to the report, Faridabad has more than 1 lakh illegal water connections and more than 74,000 in kernel. In addition, the issue of uranium contamination in groundwater in 16 districts of Haryana has been found.

Illegal water connection

Due to illegal water connections, the PAC reports that the government is losing revenues and the water is increasing. According to the National Water Policy, all water connections in the urban areas should be converted into meters within a year. By March 2017 in the countryside, 50% of connections must be taken meters, but no concrete measures have been taken in this direction.

Strict questions about water quality

CAG reports that drinking water is polluted by goliform bacteria in many places. In addition, the body and chemical properties of the water have been found to be greater than the permitted range. Water standards at the Faridabad Municipal Corporation have not been completed in 8 out of 8 of the water tests. Frogs and algae were found in water tanks, which raise questions about the quality and hygiene of water.

Need to implement water policy

PAC has suggested this:

  • All illegal water connections must be legalized and the meter should be installed.
  • The billing system must be implemented based on water consumption.
