From April 1, the Government of India is going to implement the import duty on Gram. The Revenue Department of the Ministry of Finance has issued a notification. According to this announcement, this import tax is recovered because the federal government believes that this is essential in public welfare. But on the other hand, the industry is not happy at this end of the government, because they think this line is very low to encourage imports. This year, amid expectations of high gram yield, 10 per cent import tax is levied.

Disappointment in industry due to low cost

However, the government has decided not to place any agricultural infrastructure funds when it comes to restoring customs duty on G. This tax is usually 10 percent. The government says the 10 percent import tax on the imposed 10 percent of the imports will be very humble and will be absorbed at the price. Explain that the Gram industry believed that it would be more obligatory on gram imports. The industry is demanding at least 25 percent import duty from the government.

An English newspaper about this said, ‘The Business Line’, Bharat Pulses and Grain Association President Bimal Kothari said, “Import will continue and production will be recovered. It will refer to planting more crops in June.”

Grain production estimates

Significantly, the Gram crop was affected by the extraordinary weather due to the last season El Nio. Because of this, the center has done an import duty on the Gram since May 2024. However, it is estimated that this year will increase 12.61 million tonnes of June 11.04 million tonnes in 2023-24. Apart from good yields, India imported more than 1.25 million tonnes from Australia and Tanzania between April 2024 and February 2025. A year ago, this import was only 0.16 million tonnes.

Farmers benefit from the decision

Explain that the decision to impose a 10 per cent import duty on the Gram will take place at Rs 5,461 per Quantile and the minimum support price (MSP) is Rs 5,650. However, the MSP prices in the Agricultural-Workshop Marketing Committee yard, especially in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. This decision by the government may stop falling at the price of gram and will protect the interests of farmers.

During the 2025 rabbi season, the government has also approved the purchase of a total of 27.99 lakh tonnes of MSP. This has recently increased the import window without yellow peas charges until May 31, 2025. The yellow pea fee was opened in December 2023.
