Discrimination, violence and harassment towards people LGBTQ+ has no place in any society. Therefore, on May 17, as every year, the International Day against Homosexuality, BIFOBIA and Translia.

This date is an opportunity to think about progress and ongoing challenges, as well as to reaffirm our commitment to combating discrimination and violence against people LGBTQ+. Equality, freedom, human dignity, non -discrimination and justice are basic global values that must be applied without exception to all people, regardless of their sexual inclinations or sexual identity.

Unfortunately, in many places, violence and discrimination are still motivated by a sad truth. Sexual inclination and sexual identity are still used as a justification for discrimination, violence, harassment and deaf gay people, creating an environment of intolerance and marginalization. Therefore, we must join the rejection of all forms of discrimination and harassment towards people LGBTQ+, including speeches and hate crimes, whether in the material world or in the digital environment.

Last year, both positive progress and disturbances were observed in different parts of the world. The battle has not yet been profitable and there are many challenges to overcome. This is why we must increase procedures to eliminate inequality and all forms of discrimination, with the continuous commitment to all social, political and economic actors.

In the European Union (EU), we will continue to advance in the struggle for equality. The European Commission plans to provide an updated strategy on equality between LGBTQ+, which will include measures against “transfer practices” equal to SO and a comprehensive approach to tackling harassment and violence out of hatred, via the Internet and abroad.

Mexico, a country with a rich history of human rights, is an essential ally in promoting and protecting LGBTQ rights. Over the years, we have witnessed an important progress in implementing public policies and legislative reforms aimed at preventing violence and eliminating discrimination against people LGBTQ+. However, there are still challenges such as transportation marks, which are a serious concern.

The European Union and Mexico share a common vision of the importance of respecting diversity and ensuring human rights for all people. In this sense, our cooperation in this field is the key. Many projects supported by the European Union in Mexico include the LGBTQ+ in its approach. An example of this is the work related to the search for missing persons, which in many cases took into account the LGBTQ+. In addition, the recent call to civil society proposals, under assessment, includes a lot of the right of women and adolescents to live a life free from violence, which explicitly includes gay, heavy and transgender women. In this way, their own needs are recognized and that they do not remain in gender equality policies. This approach reflects the will to work together in creating comprehensive and fair policies, which recognize the weakness and diversity of this population.

Every person deserves to live in freedom, equality and dignity, regardless of who or he loves. Therefore, LGBTQ rights are human rights. Together, we can build a more comprehensive and equal world, where the dignity of all people is respected.
