Despite the reduction in sugar production in India this year, there is enough sugar to meet the demand by the end of the season by 2025. The National Co -operative Sugar Factory Federation (NFCSF) provided this information on Thursday. The NFCSF released these figures that India’s closing stock would last from 4.8 to 5 million tonnes, and that despite production decline in 2024-25 seasons, it was sufficient to meet the domestic demand in October-2025. The Chinese season runs from October to September.
Sugar production reached 25.74 million tonnes
Sugar production was 25.74 million tonnes by May 15, 2024-25, the Co-operative Company said. This fell 18.38 percent compared to last year. A year ago, sugar production was recorded at 31.54 million tonnes in the same period. NFCSF said the decline in the production of Chinese recovery rates would cause a decline. The previous recovery rate was 10.10 per cent, which has now fallen to 9.30 per cent. Also, there is a lack of sugarcane available for crushing.
Sugarcane crushing decline
The company said sugarcane crushing was 312.26 million tonnes from October to May 15 last season, which fell to 276.77 million tonnes in the same period this year. NFCSF estimated 26.11 million tonnes of total sugar production in 2024-25, which was 31.9 million tonnes in the previous season. The federation issued a statement that the closure stock at the end of this season is estimated to be about 4.8–5 million tonnes, which is sufficient to meet the domestic demand in October and November 2025.
Production will be fast in the upcoming season!
Production is expected to rise in 2025-26 seasons due to favorable monsoon and sugarcane sowing in Maharashtra and Karnataka. The sugar prices will be Rs 3,880-3,920 per quintal, supported by the government’s decision to allow low production and exports.
NFCSF has issued these requests from the government
The NFSSF has called for the government to increase the minimum sales price of sugar to compensate for increased production costs, announcing Ethanol’s 5 million tonnes of sugar diverse target, edit procurement values and maintain a progressive export policy by 2025-26. (PTI)
