Poás, one of the main tourist attractions in Costa Rica, remained on Monday on an orange alert due to the increase in the gases emanating from its hole, which means greater potential.
Colossus, which has a height of 2708 meters, is surrounded by a thick forest and is 50 km by road from San Jose, from its activity on March 1, prompting the authorities to restrict visits, without suspending them.
“We have a lot of information that tells us that there is a liquid contribution of depth,” said French volcanoes, Jeffroy Avrad, of the Observatory and Zlazology in Costaicori.
“At this time (Poás) at the third level (orange alert), which we call” caution. “It is the third level of four, because the volcano offers many aspects that generate anxiety.”
According to the National Seismic Network, Costa Rica has more than 120 volcanic foci, although most of them have become extinct and only five are active: El Poás, old woman corner, sand, irazú and Turaryba.
“Poás) is currently unstable, and the form of gases indicates that it is magma.”
Visits to the volcano were suspended from April 2017 to August 2018 due to the explosions. They were resumed with larger security measures, including shelters and protection equipment for visitors.
“The most important explosion that we had during the past decade – or a little more than that – was the revolution of 2017, especially after April 22 (…) a kilometer rock.”
Comment on visits had a strong economic impact for societies close to the volcano, whose income depends on tourism.
Cristiano de Fretas, a Brazilian football teacher, said that the gas was increasing a lot.

N. From R. The increase in activity in Poás volcano and an orange alert statement by the Costa Rica authorities means a large level of monitoring. This alert, according to the protocols of the National Risk Management System (CNE), means operational restrictions in the Volcan Boz National Park and the ability to suspend activities if the situation is strict.
According to the latest report on the Observatory and Zlaziology in Costaicori, which was published on March 21, 2025, Poas continues to emit steam columns with rock content, especially sulfur dioxide (so₂), which has reached concentrations greater than 1,200 tons per day, which are highly high levels compared to calm (<300 T/ this confirms the existence of the existence Migration to shallow depth, which raises a risk from water level or even magma.
The last activity coincided with an increase in the earthquakes of the long type (LP) and the Tsuna volcano (VT), which is associated with fluid movement and cracking rocks within the volcanic system. These are clear indications of pressure on the aquatic thermal system, a situation historically preceded important events in Poás.
From a tour of the tourism show, the Volcán Poás National Park received more than 400,000 visitors in 2023, according to the data of the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT), as it is one of the most visited destinations in the country. The implementation of new safety protocols, after reopening in 2018, includes gas sensors, thermal cameras, and clear evacuation methods, although their effectiveness is subject to the speed that the eruption can develop.
Finally, the outbreak of April 22, 2017, which indicates the text resulting from the pillars of the outbreak of more than 3000 meters, and expelling the ballistic blocks that reached a radius of 1.5 km, forcing the prolonged closure of the garden and evacuating the employees. It was classified as an explosive water level, a difficult man who expects his sudden nature.
