Artificial intelligence (AI) is not a promise of the future, it already turns our present. In all fields, this technology is already restoring the world in which we live. Its use raises challenges that we cannot ignore: How to ensure that it developed in the service of people?

In front of our eyes, a global profession is underway to lead this technological revolution. Like all competition, it has its positive side, because it pays innovation. But it also requires the danger of forgetting the principles that must direct all innovation.

The European Union (EU) took this challenge with responsibility. Its vision is clear: the development of artificial intelligence that enhances social welfare, enhances democracy and respects human rights.

Therefore, in August 2024, he agreed on the first list on artificial intelligence, a leading legislation that does not seek to stop technological progress, but to ensure its development safely, fair and reliable.

These regulations classify artificial intelligence techniques according to the level of risk they represent, from the minimum unacceptable. However, most current technologies are low risk and can develop without excessive restrictions. However, there are other uses – such as systems to predict crime – banned in the European Union, because they are considered incompatible with basic rights.

Now, not everything is organization. The European Union also invests in technological development to lead the progress of innovation. During the work summit held in Paris in February this year, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der LinIt announced the establishment of the Invest-E Fund, with an initial amount of 20 billion euros, and will seek to fill up to an additional 200 billion euros in the public and private sectors. The “artificial intelligence factories” are added to this, which are dynamic environmental systems that encourage innovation, cooperation and development in the field of artificial intelligence.

This European Union approach, which combines clear rules with a motive for innovation, will allow balanced and sustainable development. However, the challenges raised by artificial intelligence do not know the borders. Therefore, international cooperation is more necessary than ever. In this spirit, the European Union signed last year, along with other countries, the framework of the framework of the Council of Europe on artificial intelligence, human rights, democracy, the rule of law, and betting on the global rule responsible in this field.

As strategic partners, Mexico and the European Union have tires to cooperate in multiple fields, including technology. Through the Purta Horizone Europa program, Mexico is officially involved in the Horizon Europa program, a research and innovation framework program in the European Union. This allows Mexican and European researchers to work together on vanguard projects. Likewise, the digital alliance between the European Union and Latin America opens new opportunities to enhance cooperation at the regional level.

The moment leads to the re -launch of high -level dialogue on digital cooperation and new technologies, including a specific chapter on artificial intelligence. Two weeks ago, I was honored to participate in the opening of the International Conference on Artificial Intelligence, organized by the Chamber of Representatives and the National Institute of Applied Arts, where the European experience participated and the possibility of cooperation with Mexico. I am confident that the next meeting of the mixed parliamentary committee in Mexico, which will be held in May in Brussels, will be an opportunity to enhance our political and legislative coordination in the field of artificial intelligence.

Mexico and the European Union participate in a common vision: Artificial intelligence must be developed with a humanitarian approach and directed to the public good. This means protecting and strengthening our democracies, the rule of law and human rights. Therefore, it is necessary to work side by side until this vision prevails and ensure that technology is not above people, but always in their service.
