About 10,000 branches of flowers from the Netherlands again cover the staircase of Basilica San Pedro on the occasion of the celebration of Easter, as part of a tradition of about 40 years.
Kielce Guesie – Vatican City
Every year, on Easter, Plaza de San Pedro becomes a “piece of Netherlands”: flowers from all over the country are the steps of the smallest nation in the world.

Everything began in 1985 by defeating the Dutch priest, Titus Brandsma. In this celebration, the Dutch flower sellers decorated the place in honor of their citizens. The following year, 1986, they were invited to decorate the Easter box. Now, it has become an annual tradition.
A man from the beginning participated in this tradition, which has now become a feeling of national pride. Dr. Charles Lanbouboub recalls that the first Easter, who thanked Pope San Juan Paul II of the Dutchman their mother -in -law. He says it has become a national slogan. “In the Netherlands, if I say thanks for flowers, everyone knows what you are talking about.”
Dr. Lanoufoub states that this cooperation between the Vatican and the Dutch flowers sellers “is the tallest project” for the flower industry in the Netherlands. He says, every year, this cooperation “brings spring to Rome”, where thousands of flowers are placed in front of the Church of San Pedro.
“Take the spring” to Rome takes time
To prepare flowers and decorations on Easter, the gardeners work in the Vatican and the Dutch flower sellers together. Volunteers start building every Thursday to collect, install and status flowers. On Saturday morning, the whole world attends the collection of floral elements.
Over two days, about 10,000 flowers are transferred from different countries from the Netherlands to the Vatican city. At this time, the steps that lead to the Church of San Pedro are transformed while “it was as if we were taking spring to Rome.”
This year, in honor of the jubilio de la Espranza, there is a special arrangement. “We will have the colors of the pilgrims logo in the Holy Year,” explains Dr. Lansouboub.
Tulipanes, lamps, roses and plants in abundance
For Dr. Lansdorp, it is not surprising that Easter flowers are the cause of pride for the Netherlands. It is reported that this activity may be the greatest vision of the Dutch industry around the world. “It is unique because we cut flowers, lamps and plants,” describes. “It is really the Netherlands, which presents itself as a pink industry.”
